Please note that the "Small Craft Safety Course" includes the BoatSmart Certificate. This is because the "Small Craft Safety Course" builds on the skills and knowledge introduced by the BoatSmart course.
It is recommended that you complete the "Small Craft Safety Course" as it offers more supervised time on the water and increased opportunity for you to develop your own knowledge and ability.

DPI BoatSmart

 BoatSmart Certificate

BoatSmart is a one day training course for recreational boat drivers in Western Australia.

BoatSmart was introduced by the Marine Division of the DPI and reflects the State's philosophy of emphasising education rather than regulation.

The BoatSmart Certificate is endorsed by the State Boating Council, nationally recognised and is equivalent to a recreational boat driver's license in those states that require a license

Small Craft Safety Course

The Small Craft Safety course is the introductory course for boating enthusiasts. It is an educational program that will take participants through the various elements of boating safety.
Course Content

The course contains a 20 hr theory component and an 8 hr practical section.

Age Limits to be in charge of a motor boat

Regulation 49a(2) of the Navigable Waters Regulations states that;
"A person who is under the age of 17 years but not under the age of 14 years, who holds a current and valid Certificate of Proficiency in the Operation of Pleasure Vessels, issued under regulation 27A of the W.A. Marine (Certificates of Competency and Safety Manning) Regulations 1983, may drive or operate a motor boat."
This course will allow persons between the age of 14 and 17 to operate a power driven vessel of more than 4.5 kwp on their own. It does not however allow that person to operate a vessel engaged in skiing if unsupervised by an adult.
