- The Hull Identification Numbering system (HIN)
BUILT IN SECURITY FOR YOUR BOAT

The HIN shall be displayed in alphanumerical characters and upper case letters and shall read from left to right.
WHY WE NEED BoatCode?
Boat theft is at an all time high. By having a national identification system, boats can be
tracked Australia wide if they are stolen or still have finance owing on them.

How BoatCode Works?
Each day there will be computer updates on Transport's database with links to the WA Police Service and the Ministry of Fair Trading.
• Stolen boats will be immediately recorded. Any transaction attempted by a person trying to re-register a stolen boat will be referred to the Police.
• The system will also be linked to the Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) and will result in additional security to buyers of second hand boats.
They will be able to check if there are any outstanding financial obligations attached to the vessel.
• Interest rates offered by financiers may also become more competitive with other types of loans. Insurance companies may also offer incentives.

WHAT IS HIN?
The Hull Identification Number (HIN) system consists of a unique series of characters and numbers conforming to ISO 10087:1995(E). A metal plate is fastened to the hull or numbers are moulded or engraved in the hull. This is done either at manufacture or by our BoatCode Agents. A HIN is required only-
when the boat is first registered, upon change of ownership or when requested by owners of existing registered boats.
The system is similar to the chassis number (VIN) on motor vehicles.
Basic details of the vessel are recorded on a national database.
